Big Band serenades Old Boys Club

The PBHS Big Band entertained the Old Boys Club with an evening of jazz, brass and relaxed outdoor performances.

Pretoria Boys High School’s Big Band recently treated attendees to numbers performed by around 50 band members.

Friday the 13th wasn’t particularly unlucky for attendees as they were treated to the band’s performances from 17:00–19:00, in addition to watching the live cricket.

Playing at the Old Boys Club is a long-standing tradition at PBHS, and music teacher and band conductor, David McCoy, says it is a great platform for the band to hone their skills ahead of larger concerts throughout the year.

“I think it’s important to connect with the old boys and the rest of the club, and it also gives our boys the chance to perform in a more relaxed setting,” McCoy says.

“We so often perform in concerts, so it’s nice to give them a relaxed setting to perform at. So we’re playing some outdoor music, it’s a good event for us, we try to do it twice a year at least, provide some entertainment to the old boys club, while they’re doing sports, or having sundowner drinks.

“We got some jazz, some saxophones, and some drums and percussion,” McCoy adds.

McCoy says they have 30 members of the big band and around 20 in the brass ensemble, and he has been working with the group since 2024.

The band looks forward to the café concerts this week at the school hall, and a Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat musical in May, among many other concerts this year.
