Pretoria North substation fault deepens concerns over electricity reliability
Frustrated residents and businesses are calling for urgent intervention after another prolonged power outage, saying recurring electricity failures are disrupting daily life and causing financial losses.

Residents and businesses in Pretoria North are calling on the Tshwane metro to urgently address recurring electricity outages after another prolonged power failure left parts of the area without electricity over the weekend.
According to a progress report by the Rosslyn Electricity Depot on May 30, an abnormality at the Jan van Riebeeck Substation affected several parts of Pretoria North.
Although power was restored to some consumers, many residents remained without electricity as technicians continued searching for the fault on the network.
The outage affected areas including Gerrit Maritz Street, Eeufees Road, Jack Hindon Street, Danie Theron Street, General Beyers Street, and West Street.
Municipal teams reported that an abnormal fault had been identified between two points in the substation, but by 13:00 they had not yet positively identified the exact fault point or located the damaged cable.
The report stated that the testing team had been unable to locate the fault point the previous day.
Maintenance teams were expected to be dispatched once the fault was positively identified.
Residents said the continued electricity disruptions are becoming increasingly difficult to manage, particularly for households with children, elderly family members, and those working from home.
Pretoria North resident Mariam Julla expressed her frustration, saying residents deserve better communication and faster response times.
“We understand that faults happen, but it feels like we are dealing with the same problem over and over again.
“We spend hours without electricity and often receive very little information about when power will actually be restored. It is becoming extremely frustrating,” she said.
Jeanine Meyer of Burger Street said the outages are having a financial impact on families and small businesses.
“Every time the power goes off unexpectedly, food spoils and businesses lose money. Some of us work remotely and cannot afford to be disconnected for such long periods. We need long-term solutions, not temporary fixes,” she said.
The electricity challenges come as residents continue to raise concerns about the reliability of infrastructure serving the Pretoria North area.
Residents have urged the metro to improve communication during outages and provide regular updates on repair progress.
Many say they are growing weary of repeated power interruptions and want urgent intervention to ensure a more stable electricity supply.
Ward 2 councillor Quentin Meyer said the recurring outages are a source of growing frustration for residents and that he continues to engage with the metro to ensure that faults are resolved as quickly as possible.
