106 suspects arrested in central weekend operation
To curb the scourge of illegal immigration, the police arrested 47 undocumented migrants in Garsfontein, Silverton and Sunnyside. During September, almost the same number of undocumented persons was processed within the corridor.
More than a hundred suspects were arrested this past weekend in a special operation by central police stations and other law enforcement agencies in the Tshwane central corridor.
The corridor comprises Lyttelton, Silverton, Garsfontein, Sunnyside, Brooklyn, nearby Pretoria North as well as some areas east of Pretoria.
The stations that took part in this weekend’s effort however were Lyttelton, Pretoria North, Central and police stations in Pretoria east.
Police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela views the weekend operation as a success and confirms that of the more than 106 suspects arrested, 47 of them were undocumented immigrants.
“To curb the scourge of illegal immigration, the police arrested 47 undocumented migrants in Garsfontein, Silverton and Sunnyside. During September, almost the same number of undocumented persons was processed within the corridor,” said Mavimbela.
Mavimbela also recently announced that a multidisciplinary operation in Pretoria, Sunnyside arrested 340 people late last month of which 65 people were undocumented and have since been processed.
The undocumented persons were subjected to further processing by home affairs and are expected to be deported after their court appearances.
The other 59 suspects were arrested for various offences in various areas in the corridor.
The crimes other suspects were apprehended for include theft from local supermarkets, property theft such as copper cables, as well as theft of motor vehicles in Lyttelton, Brooklyn and Pretoria North.
“Other suspects were caught for offences ranging from assault under the Domestic Violence Act, possession of drugs, malicious damage to property, fraud and sexual assault,” continued Mavimbela.
The law enforcement entities involved in the effort hope these initiatives will continue to deter acts of lawlessness in the area and preserve community safety for all residents.
All suspects arrested this weekend are expected to appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court to face their charges soon.
