Vikings Ladies gear up for playoffs
Viking Ladies clinched the Tshwane women’s football league with one game to spare and now look forward to the playoffs.
Vikings Ladies secured the Tshwane women’s football league title on Sunday by winning their 26 games against two draws and two losses.
Head coach Grace Somo said the team had a tough season but an incredible journey.
Somo said she has achieved what she wanted to achieve with the team, which is winning a title.
Having been one of the players who played women’s varsity football for TUT and won some trophies, Somo said it was great to see players win a trophy under her leadership.
“I have won a cup before and I know how it feels so I wanted these girls to feel what I felt when I won a trophy,” she said.
She said changing the mentality of the players and training helped them win the league.
Captain Tshegofatso Aphane said she was delighted to come out on top this season considering that they didn’t have it easy in the previous seasons.
She said lifting the trophy was an amazing feeling, and seeing some of her teammates lifting the trophy for the first time was a wonderful feeling.
She admitted that it wasn’t always smooth sailing but they had the support they needed.
“It was a bit difficult but we pulled through because of our coaches and also for TUT who gave us transport because some people don’t have such privilege,” she said.
The Ga-Rankuwa-based team will soon compete in the playoffs against other regions to determine the overall winner.
Aphane said the team are working hard towards the playoffs although the dates for those games are yet to be announced.
“We also heading into the women’s varsity football and we are going to gain some experience and I believe that those who are not playing varsity football are keeping themselves busy so that they can be well prepared,” she said.
