Sassa warns social grant recipients of fake messages

The agency received numerous queries from social grant recipients who received these fake messages.

Messages and voice notes that call on Sassa beneficiaries to swap out their gold cards are fake.

According to the local Sassa office warning issued this week, this is a scam.

The message advised social grants recipients to visit Sassa offices for a new card and failure to do so would mean one would not receive their grant for December.

Sassa Gauteng spokesperson Nandi Mosia said the message is fake and beneficiaries must ignore it.

She said the office has been inundated with queries from clients who received these fake texts by SMS or read them on social media.

“Please note that the texts and voice notes that are circulating on social media are fake and misleading and do not originate from Sassa,” she said.

The agency urged the public to refrain from circulating such information as it causes unnecessary confusion and panic for beneficiaries.

“The Sassa gold card is still working and valid and beneficiaries will continue receiving their grant as per payment dates unless they choose other alternative forms of receiving their grant payment such as opening personal bank accounts,” she said.

She added that beneficiaries will be informed of the changes or developments regarding Sassa-related matters should there be any in the future.
