Essentials to take with you for medical emergencies

A handy medical checklist to consult before you leave on holiday.

However you may be travelling this festive season, remember that anything can happen: but you can prepare for unforeseen emergencies by ensuring that you take medical essentials with you.

You need at least the following items:

– First aid kit

Having a well-stocked first aid kit will go a long way to ensuring you have a happy, healthy holiday. Check and re-stock your kit before you leave.

Over-the-counter medicines, including pain meds, burns ointment, antihistamines, treatments for insect stings, as well as the ever-necessary antacid and rehydration remedies should be in this kit. Dressings, plasters and disinfectant should also be on hand.

If family members are on prescription medication or have allergies, make a list with each family member’s medical information, including any allergies, medication and existing health conditions.

Emergency contact numbers and medical scheme membership numbers should also be included in the kit. Make sure it is easily seen by anyone who opens the kit. You may not be able to give the information to a helper. Keep an extra copy of this information in your car’s glove compartment.

– Sufficient quantities of prescribed medications

Ensure that you fill prescriptions before you travel as you may not be able to fill your prescription at another venue.

– Emergency services stickers on your vehicle

One simple precaution is the emergency medical services stickers on your vehicle. If you were to be involved in a motor vehicle accident, people on the scene could identify the correct providers to assist you.

It is always best to be prepared for worst-case scenarios, therefore make sure that your vehicle is equipped with a spare tyre, warning triangle and a few basic tools.

– Your medical scheme membership card

In the event of an accident this would be a crucial item, therefore keep it with you, and perhaps make a copy to be kept in the kit and glove compartment too.

Whether you are heading to the beach or travelling to visit family ensure that you are prepared for all eventualities.
