Stay gas-safe this festive season: Make sure to use gas safely when preparing your festive meals this year.

Many of us cook on gas: take care with these tips

In preparation for festive get-togethers, these safety tips will be good to remember to ensure that there would not be accidents caused by the incorrect use of gas.

– Never leave your gas stove unattended when cooking.
Yes, the family and friends are milling around, there are more people in the kitchen than normal. So make absolutely sure you know at all times what the status of the gas is. And never walk away and not keep an eye on the stove. Many accidents have happened while people fell asleep, forgetting the gas on.

– Leave the LPG cylinder in a safe space in an upright position.
Make sure the area where the cylinder is situated, is well ventilated, kept dry and standing at all times. Make sure that the valves are always at the top of the cylinder. When something does go wrong it must be easy to reach the cylinder and the valves to be able to turn it closed.

– Ensure that your equipment is up to date.
Take special care to ensure that you are using the correct equipment, and not outdated equipment. Make sure by checking before buying, and buy a recommended brand with the correct certification. You should check the equipment’s condition before each use. Outside gas equipment must be made safe and covered against rain. Check often that nothing has rusted, as that could lead to leaking.

– Open a window for ventilation.
One of the most significant things to consider when using gas for cooking is ventilation. Always place the gas cylinder in an open area, such as near a door or window to ensure adequate air circulation. Gas cylinders must be kept away from all other heat sources especially electric outlets.

– Stay Safe
The most important safety tip for using gas is to purchase your equipment from an authorised dealer with the correct certification. Also, always check for quality markings on the cylinder, such as trademarks, expiry dates, tare weight, and serial or code number.
