What made Moot Rekord headlines in 2022

Here are some of the biggest stories of 2022:

Steve Biko Hospital amputations

Four patients suffered painful amputations at the Steve Biko hospital after waiting days for an operation.
Barnard Swanepoel had his foot amputated following a severe infection.
Similarly, Hester Petronella had a large part of her right leg amputated due infection.
Freddy Blinn and Herman Keyser were both left unattended for days before being admitted to an operating theatre.
Both men suffered amputations as a result.
Family and friends were outraged and felt the hospital was neglecting its patients.
The hospital responded by saying that it had the necessary resources to take care of patients but prioritised according to the severity of their condition.

Child Protection counselling hotline
With the help of a local radio station, the Child Protection Hotline launched its own counselling hotline.
The counselling hotline is available 24 hours a day and aims to help young people in distress.
Danie van Loggerenberg, CEO of child protection said the hotline is available to anyone between the ages of 16 and 35.
The hotline has a team of highly trained and qualified counsellors to give callers the help they need.

Many residents are concerned about the condition of the spring.

Condition of the Moot spring a cause for concern
The spring that runs through the Moot has proven to be a bigger problem than most residents realised.
Constant littering has led to many feeling concerned about the quality of the water.
Water tests by the metro concluded that raw sewage was spilling into the spring from a nearby informal settlement.
Some residents are concerned that the quality of the water poses a threat to the area’s biodiversity.
The spring acts as a wetland and therefore plays a crucial role in the quality of the water in the area.
Ward councillor Mari Joubert urges residents to take better care of their spring as the quality of water affects everyone around them.

The AfriForum remains committed to beautifying the neigbourhood.

AfriForum neighbourhood teams continue to grow
AfriForum’s Moot team has been hard at work all year round to keep its town orderly.
The team particularly focused on painting road markings and maintaining the parks by cutting grass and restoring some of the equipment that had been left unmaintained.
With the team growing steadily after more volunteers joined, it was able to make a lasting difference in the town and has no plan of stopping any time soon.
Neighbourhood officer Andries Opperman wants to expand his team to cover the entire Moot.

The Pierneef collection will delight art and history lovers.

JH Pierneef art now housed at Voortrekker Monument
The art of JH Pierneef was given a new home at the Voortrekker Monument where visitors can come and view the famous artist’s greatest works.
Pierneef is one of South Africa’s well-known artists with his works decorating the walls of many a home.
A special room now contains 14 of his original paintings that were previously housed in a men’s hostel at the University of Pretoria.
