School marks long-standing Spring Fair tradition

The fair featured everything from bargain clothing and market stalls to a tranquil tea garden, with learners also showcasing their talents through live music performances.

Pretoria High School for Girls (PHSG) hosted its 104th annual Spring Fair with thousands of visitors enjoying a day of community, celebration, and excellent food on September 6.

Yvonne Da Luz, chairperson of the Parents’ Association, said, “The Spring Fair is more than just a fundraiser. It is a tradition that brings our school family together. It celebrates the spirit of giving, strengthens our community, and raises funds that make a real difference for our learners and our school.”

Entertainment was in no short supply. The fair was once again supported by Pretoria Boys High School, whose renowned Pipe Band delighted the crowds, while PHSG’s own talented music students provided live performances throughout the day. Photo: Supplied

The event, held every year on the Arcadia school grounds, is a long-standing tradition and one of the highlights of the PHSG calendar.

The Thrift and Thrive stall was equally well supported. Each year, hundreds of second-hand clothes, household items, and toys are donated by the PHSG community and sold at prices that are accessible to all.

This year was no exception, with quality clothing items going for as little as R5. Bargain hunters made the most of the stall, the only cash-only section of the fair, with its own dedicated entrance.

The wider market added to the festive atmosphere, with stalls selling plants, toys, leather goods, accessories, novelty gifts, and much more.

Visitors also took the opportunity to relax in the tranquil tea garden, enjoying cappuccinos and cake, while listening to music performed by PHSG learners.

Food stalls were another big drawcard, with favourites such as spicy butter chicken, boerewors off the braai, Portuguese prego rolls and kotas. Those with a sweet tooth were spoiled for choice with hot cinnamon pancakes, bubble tea, and an assortment of desserts.

Adding to the excitement, TuksFM broadcast live from the fair, adding energy and atmosphere to the event.

The success of the day relied on the efforts of the whole PHSG community, with parents, staff, learners, and alumni contributing through donations and volunteering their time.

“We are always grateful for the overwhelming support we receive from the PHSG community and for our incredible Parents’ Association, without whom the Spring Fair would not be possible,” said Kerry du Toit, spokesperson for the school.
