Pretoria police arrest more than 45 in city centre

Police say drugs play a huge role in the increase in crime in the city centre.

Pretoria Central police arrested more than 45 people in the area over the past five days.

Spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe blamed the role of drugs for an increase in crimes such as theft, theft out of motor vehicles and robbery in the area.

“We have made a commitment to fight the drug problem in the city,” she said.

The suspects arrested were all aged between 21 and 33 years.

Selepe said three were arrested for possession of drugs and one for dealing drugs.

In a separate incident, she said two suspects aged 19 and 28 were arrested for business burglary.

“They were found inside a shop packing stolen items into their bags.”

She said the Pretoria SAPS would have operations to crack down on drug abuse.

“We encourage the community to join hands with police and report those who are selling drugs.”
