SPORT: Another Sundowns-Wydad showdown

Sundowns and Casablanca have had memorable matches in the past three years with their rivalry catching the attention of many fans across the North African continent.

Having safely qualified for the CAF Champions League semi-final, Mamelodi Sundowns now faces another huge task.

They face off against their rivals Wydad Casablanca from Morocco next month in the two-legged semi-final.

Sundowns and Casablanca have had memorable matches in the past three years with their rivalry catching the attention of many fans across the North African continent.

Both teams have already faced each other in the group stages this season.

Sundowns won the first game 3-1 in a packed Lucas Moripe stadium and Wydad won the second encounter in the final group game.

Next month’s match will be a replay of the 2017 quarter-final where Downs lost on penalties.

Sundowns fans were very irritated when they were again drawn against the Moroccan giants.

“Time to humble Wydad. All supporters with or without Sundowns regalia are welcome for free entry. Lets lift the flag high,” Ree Chambwe said in a tweet.

“A team that plays home first in most cases wins. Wydad will beat downs at their home. And come with a defensive approach here in SA. End of the road for Sundowns,” Tebogo tweeted.

Charles Tshwane was impressed by Wydad’s 5-0 dubbing over Horoya in their second leg of the quarter-final.

“Strong statement of intent from Wydad. They’re saying to Sundowns: ‘Whatever you can do, we too can do it’,” read his tweet.

Downs brushed aside Ah Ahly 5-1 on aggregate to qualify for their third CAF semi-final.

Many have already tipped Downs to win their second star, but will first have to get past a resilient Casablanca side who gives nothing away.
