SPORT: SuperSport defeats lacklustre Sundowns at Loftus
A clinical perfomance from Matsatsantsa earned them their first win in six years over their neighbours.
SuperSport United claimed a 2-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns in the Tshwane derby at Loftus Versveld on Wednesday night.
This was SuperSport’s first league win against Downs since 2013.
Goals from Grant Kekana and Ghampani Lungu were enough to see United grab all three points and move to fourth on the Absa Premiership table with four games to go.
This result was a major blow for Downs, who are chasing their record 9th PSL title. The Brazilians was lacklustre throughout and hardly troubled SuperSport’s number-one keeper Ronwen Williams.

After the game, Sundowns coach told SuperSport TV that the league was gone for the Pretoria club
“I think we let ourselves down in the first-half with a soft corner kick. We defended top corner kicks in the Champions League against big boys. I think that’s where the game was lost. And the second goal was just one mistake,” he conceded.
“But, yes, we didn’t have the legs. We can take it as an excuse, but it’s the reality. We had a lot of players out, so we tried to bring in other guys. They were not up to the speed of the game and you can’t blame them.”
Mosimane said the main focus should be winning CAF Champions League and not the PSL.
“Leave the league. My opinion,” he said.
“Credit to SuperSport, they were fresher. We played against a well-rested team. But it’s not an excuse. We put ourselves in this position. So the league let it go to the team that’s supposed to win it.”
Matsatsantsa coach Kaitano Tembo was satisfied with the result and after the game he did say his team were still in the title race.
“I think we managed the game very well, we knew that their full-backs will be going high up and we needed to use the space in the pockets they leave and also deal with the balls over our defence. So our distances were very good,” Tembo said.
Orlando Pirates are currently leading the PSL standing with 50 points seven more than United, who are fourth but have a game in hand.

Tembo, however, believes that his side can still claim the title if they win all their remaining four games.
“It’s not done yet. There’s still a lot of points to play for and anything can happen. We have four games to go; that’s 12 points,” he said.
“If we can try to win all of them who knows where we are going to finish, so we keep on fighting.”
SuperSport will look to finish the league strongly as their next fixtures are against Amazulu and title-chasing Bidvest Wits.
Sundowns, who now have two games in hand, will have to face relegation-threatened Baroka and Chippa United as they play to catch up.
