SPORT: Young Menlo Park talent looking to crack Super Rugby team

"I just want to contribute as much as I can to the team and cement my place in the team, obviously.”

After dominating the Varsity Cup for a number of seasons, Menlo Park scrum-half Andre Warner is now hoping to crack the Blue Bulls first team.

Warner has made limited appearances in the Super Rugby series and aims to make the most of his opportunities if given a chance to play in rugby’s most prestigious tournament in the southern hemisphere.

Speaking to Rekord, the 26-year-old Cape Town born star said he comes from a family of sport fanatics.

“As a young boy, I always loved sports, I was good in cricket and rugby in school but decided to pursue rugby in high school mainly because I was better in rugby,” he said.

“My father and uncle played rugby so that really helped me a lot.”

He went to Hoërskool Tygerberg in Cape Town where he played for the first team.

“Although my father was my inspiration, my high school coach Gavin Beresford discovered me and has been my mentor and motivator since.”

In 2013, Warner made a big move to Pretoria after obtaining a University of Pretoria bursary winning the Varsity Cup with the Tuks rugby team in 2017.

He said his proudest moment was making his debut against the Sharks in 2017.

“Making your debut is a special moment that can’t be replaced. I was on cloud nine that day and what made the day even more special was that we won.”

Warner said his biggest dream was to become a Bulls regular and making the national team.

“I just want to contribute as much as I can to the team and cement my place in the team, obviously. There’s still a lot of work to do but I’m positive.”

He urged the youth to keep pushing until the door opens.

“Being a sport star is not easy, one needs to keep working hard non-stop,” he advised.

“Understand that nothing in life is guaranteed, if one door closes, another one will open, you just have to keep going.”
