SPORT: PTA cricket ‘magician’ Shamsi thankful for World Cup selection

VIDEO: He was the leading wicket taker in the 2017-18 Momentum One Day Cup, with 26 wickets in nine matches.

Multiply Titans spinner Tabrais Shamsi has expressed delight in being named in the Proteas 15-man World Cup squad.

“So thankful for this opportunity. Thank you to those who have shown faith in me,” said the 29-year-old Pretorian in a tweet.

“Not happy just to be going there to take part, going there to fight and bring back the cup for our country.”

Shamsi has been one of the most consistent bowlers in the country for a few years and his selection ahead of the World Cup in England next month is justified.

He was also the leading wicket taker in the 2017-18 Momentum One Day Cup, with 26 wickets in nine matches.

Last year, he was the joint leading wicket taker in the inaugural Mzansi Super League.

Speaking to Rekord over a year ago, Shamsi said having fun in the field was one of the reasons behind his success.

“Don’t ever forget that little kid inside you that got so much joy from playing the game, that is the reason you started,” he said.

“Too often people worry about the wrong things; pressure is always there and people have different ways of handling it. Play with passion and that fire inside you, give your all for the team and never forget to have fun while doing what you love.”

The man known as ‘the magician’ said he thrives under pressure.

“The biggest motivation comes from me. I do a lot of work behind the scene, to make sure I’m well prepared for the game. During the game, I want to enjoy the game as much as I can and that helps me deal better with pressure.”
