SPORT: Mike One Stars claims victory in the SAB league
Mike One Stars nailed 1-0 against Edusport in Philip Stadium on Sunday.
Mike One Stars claimed victory over Edusport in the South African Breweries (SAB) League game at Philip stadium in Soshanguve on Sunday.
The team romped home with a 1-0 victory over Edusport to reach the finals.
“We treat every game as a final. Yesterday we played with Chillie Boys and we beat them. I have to say, this game made me very proud of my boys. I know it was not easy,” said Mike One Stars coach Junior Diale.
Diale said a few changes made were key during the early stages of the game.
“I saw what the challenges were and I had to think on my feet.
“I had to make quick substitutions. The person we put in the game is an experienced player and a force. I knew he was going give that edge upfront. He missed a lot of chances, but he is my best player. I was not surprised when he finally scored,” said Diale.
Edusport showed composure from the start of the match with Marvellous Shilenge playing at 10, but missing a few opportunities before and after half time.
“I think height was a bit of a challenge because we only have a tall man playing the centre-back and Mike One has a lot of tall players. We know this team; they play a rude game so whenever we get a chance to score, we had to take the ball in,” said Shilenge.
At half time, there was anger from Edusport fans at the referee whom they thought was favouring Mike One Stars.
Edusport coach Maud Khumalo claimed the referee was biased, which cost them the match.
“I think the referee waited for Mike One to score first so that it can be difficult for us to either score or strike back, but it is fine. My boys represented all tactics well today,” said Khumalo.
Stars coach Diale said: “People will always have something to say. The referee, Stevens Khumalo is our team’s former goalkeeper coach. I guess that is why they think the referee is favouring us. He used to help us train the goalkeeper and even when someone is injured in the field, he would assist.
“We won as always, regardless of what people say, cheers to my boys,” added Diale.
