SPORT: Mountain Eagles wraps up friendly challenge in style
Mountain Eagles from Soshanguve in Itsoseng Phase 6 put up a tough defense against Super Stars and Juju Baby at Block TT sports ground on Saturday.
Newly-formed netball team Mountain Eagles scored two impressive wins on Saturday during the second round matches.
Eagles put away Super Stars 15-9 and went on to claim a narrow 9-7 win over Juju Bay.
The two games took place at block TT sports grounds in Soshanguve, Itsoseng phase 6.
Eagles defended well, allowing goal shooter Mphemetsi Mahlabe to contribute to the team’s victory.
Super Stars led 5-6 by the end of the first quarter against Eagles.
But Eagles’ confidence levels were boosted in the second quarter, as they reached 10-3 against Super Stars.
Mountains Eagles coach and founder Francinah Mahlabe said from both the friendly games, they had something to take home.
The 28-year-old Mahlabe had previously played for Sosh Movers and Ajax, all from Soshanguve. She started her netball team in May.
“We learned many lessons. Communication was the biggest challenge. We need to work on that because that can hinder the outcome of a game. If we are able to communicate well, even with the defence, everything works out for the best for both teams,” said Mahlabe.
“Our goal shooter boosted the team’s confidence. We carried through with our winning spirit as her talent of scoring made us win the games. Most importantly, our immense passion came out during both games. Netball is in our blood, we love it and confidence is always there,” she added.
“I was not satisfied with the appointed umpires. I prefer when we play, total strangers umpire us. Respect was not shown.”
Goal shooter Mphemetsi Mahlabe (18) said she enjoyed showing off her skills during the friendly game with Juju Baby.
“I have always been passionate about netball. My mother, who used to play netball herself, was supportive. In primary school, we had a net where I would practice to shoot balls,” said Mahlabe.
“I love that I can get together with my peers.”
Goal defender Promise Masipa (21) said: “I used to play for the netball team at Ruabohlale High School. I joined Mountain Eagles when it started because my previous team collapsed. I enjoyed today’s game but I think we can work on communication.”
