EC youths enjoying their rugby in the capital

"I saw that as an opportunity to get away from a tough and challenging upbringing."

Two Hoërskool Overkruin matriculants are relishing the opportunity to make the best of their time playing first team rugby for the school.

Duwane Pietersen (18) and Wesley Damons (19) are from the Eastern Cape but have been resident in Pretoria for two years.

“I’m originally from Port Elizabeth and have been playing rugby since primary school. Two years ago, I got a call from coach Andrew (Niemand) who wanted me to play my rugby in Pretoria for the school. I saw that as an opportunity to get away from a tough and challenging upbringing.”

He says playing for Overkruin has helped him improve his game and changed his life.

“Although I’m a Sharks and Hurricanes fan, my favourite is Rosco Specman. As a winger, he’s someone I look up to and aspire to be like one day,” he said, adding that moving to Pretoria had given him a purpose.

“The thing I love about this city the most is that the people are very friendly and welcoming. I’m grateful for this opportunity and my aim is to make my team and school proud,” Pietersen added.

Damons, who plays for the first team as a utility back, said his biggest achievement to date was playing for the Blue Bulls juniors.

“I represented the junior Bulls at the Craven Week tournament. My experience there was life changing. I played with some the guys from other schools and I learned a lot in a short space of time.

Although he enjoys his time in Pretoria, Damons says his dream is to move to Durban and play for the Sharks.

Hoërskool Overkruin assistant rugby coach Andrew Niemand said the youngsters were impressive to watch due to their natural talents.

“The first time I saw Wesley and Duwane on the rugby field, I knew they were something special and had remarkable talents.

“Wesley, with this technical ability and vision… is a must (to have) for a flyhalf.”

“Duwane, has lightning speed and great handling skills. Many would think an athlete does not always have good ball skills but Duwane surely ticks every box as a wing,” said Niemand.
