SPORT: Percy Tau relishing prospect of playing in Afcon

The former Clapham High pupil is expected to be fit against Ivory Coast in Bafana's Afcon opener.

Bafana Bafana striker Percy Tau says he is relishing the prospect of playing in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament, which kicks off later this month in Egypt.

The 25-year-old player is looking to make a statement in the Afcon tournament after having a fantastic season in Belgium that saw him named player of the season.

Tau is recovering from a foot injury which he sustained towards the end of the season.

The SA Football Association is hopeful the former Clapham High School pupil will be fit against Ivory Coast in their Afcon opener.

“The most important thing is to look after yourself. My body has become adjusted to this rigorous schedule of professional football.

“It has been a good year for me in Belgium. What I have done (collecting personal accolades) and what the team has done; lots of positives,” Tau said.

Tau, who won the league and CAF Champions League with Downs said he needed to stay focused in his journey and was happy that he took football as a profession, adding he was enjoying every moment of it.

“It took a while for me to adjust in the new environment (in Belgium), finding new friends, etc. I was at Mamelodi Sundowns for seven years and the team had become my home. Going to Belgium meant finding new friends, but that is what it is like in the football world,” he added.
