SPORT: Fans lash out at sluggish Proteas World Cup campaign

"Watching the Proteas at a World Cup is like watching the Lion King over and over again. You desperately hope Mufasa won’t die but he does and it’s devastating every single time."

Proteas’s chances of reaching the World Cup semi-final are all but over after they lost by four wickets to New Zealand on Wednesday, at Edgbaston, England.

Proteas needed to beat the Black Caps to keep their semi-final hopes alive but after limping to 241 in 49 overs, their World Cup campaign was good as gone.

Although the bowlers took wickets and kept the NZ batmen at bay, dropped catches and poor decision-making cost SA a crucial win, and the fans have taken to social media to vent their frustration.

Former Proteas opener Herschelle Gibbs said the game was lost because none of the SA batsmen scored a 100.

“(I’ve) been asking for 100 from someone from the start, can’t win games with 60s and 50s. Kane Williamson great composure under pressure,” he tweeted.

Although some blamed the bowlers for failing to defend the sub-par total, Gibbs was adamant that the blame should be put on SA batsmen.

“Nobody has got a 100 in 5 games and you wonder why we haven’t won games? Never mind catches etc etc. Get the runs and you might not have pressure from the start! Big difference,” Gibbs said.

“Watching the Proteas at a World Cup is like watching the Lion King over and over again. You desperately hope Mufasa won’t die but he does and it’s devastating every single time,” Byron Lotter said.

Proteas have a habit of choking during World cups dating back to the 1999 semi-final match against Australia. At this World Cup however, the fans believed the Proteas never put themselves in a position to even choke.

“Proteas didn’t choke this tournament. They played poorly from the first match so we can’t say they choked. At least they are now consistently poor. What little hope I had diminished after the loss to Bangladesh. It’s real sad watching them,” Nishaan Signh tweeted.
