Polokwane residents define what freedom means to them

After 30 years of democracy, people of different ages have varying definitions of what freedom is. The Polokwane Observer asked residents to define what freedom means to them.

POLOKWANE – 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the first democratic elections and Freedom Day celebrates the journey to freedom and democracy.

It is a day of peace, restoration and unity and also a day where people remember the struggles that our heroes and heroines went through.

However, after 30 years in democracy, some people have varying definitions of what freedom is.

The Polokwane Observer asked residents to define what freedom means to them:

Khomotso Sekhwela: There is no freedom in South Africa. We are still living in apartheid even though it does not show because we’re still paying for a lot of things such as education.
Ntando Mukhari: South Africans are still working on accessing freedom as there is nothing that has been done so far to prove that we are living in a free world. There are people who are still suffering to access some basic needs as South African citizens.
Prosper Mulaudzi: Freedom causes chaos because nowadays children become very disrespectful towards their parents with the intention of handing their parents to the police if they lay their hands on them. Children do things knowing very well that they are protected by their rights.
Clifford Moloto: Freedom means being free from many things which involves having access to different places and being able to know our rights so that they are not easily violated.
William Ramawela: In my opinion, I don’t see freedom in South Africa because it is not easy to get things, especially jobs, due to issues such as corruption where we have to bribe people first to get jobs.
Athalia Mangena: Freedom means people should live freely but in order for them to have access to free education and jobs they have to pay for them first, with that being said there is no freedom in South Africa.
