Baobab Fly-in event a huge success

The event saw 25 pilots partaking in the sessions, flying their aircrafts and showing the public their skills.

POLOKWANE – Area 51 RC Flyers hosted their annual Baobab Fly-in event on May 17-19, with the main event on May 18 at the Polokwane Civil Airport.

The purpose of the event was to promote the hobby to the public. It was the first time the club allowed interested people to spend the day with them to have a glimpse of what is being done on the day. The event is one of the biggest RC Aircraft events.

The event saw 25 pilots, mainly from Gauteng and Limpopo, partaking in the sessions. Every pilot was given an opportunity to fly their aircraft and show the public their skills.

“By opening the event to the public, we want to introduce the hobby to potential new pilots of all ages, races and genders. We are also one of the few clubs that have female pilots,” said Martin Erasmus, the chairperson of the club.

Carlene van Vuuren told Polokwane Observer that it is not always easy to be among male pilots, but surely something she is proud of.

“It is very intimidating to be a woman among these men, but I’m taking everything in my stride and hope to become the best.”
