DA wants Eskom to stop selling electricity to Lekwa municipality

DA wants Eskom to sell electricity directly to the people, not to the municipality because the municipality has failed to pay the Eskom account in full.

The DA wants Eskom to sell electricity directly to the consumers, not to the Lekwa Municipality, because of the municipality’s failure to pay the account in full.

They initiated a petition in the community on 7 November and will later submit it to the municipality and Eskom.

A substantial amount of money is lost through illegal connections and bridging.

According to Mr Johannes van der Wath, chairman of the DA, everyone will be affected if Eskom cuts off the supply.

“If we buy electricity from Eskom, they will be able to see who is owing and who is paying,” Mr Van der Wath said.

He also said when they decide to cut off the electricity only those who do not pay, will be affected.

The municipality is currently owing Eskom about R202 million and the amount has increased since July.
