Security at rubbish dump still a problem
Municipality apparently heightened security at rubbish dump.
SECUNDA – Safety and security are still a big problem at the local rubbish dump.
People have been assaulted and their vehicles damaged at the rubbish dump as scavengers target them when they have valuable rubbish like steel on their vehicles.
They opened cases at the police sation and one man was arrested.
The head of marketing and communications of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, Mr Henry Masango, said previously that Interwaste was the service provider and that service would be in place as soon as Interwaste has taken over.
Mr Masango said recently that the situation at the rubbish dump will improve and that all the people at the rubbish dump will be removed and only a small number of authorised reclaimers and people from the community disposing of waste, will be allowed.
He said: “Security is being heightened to ensure public safety, while negotiations are being finalised.
“The current service provider is continuing, pending the appointment of a new entity.”
The newspapers wanted to know what the municipality is doing to ensure people’s safety, but Mr Masango did not comment at the time of going to press.
