With the price of brent crude oil the lowest in 20 years, motorists and consumers have a smile on their faces again.

With the price of brent crude oil the lowest in 20 years, motorists and consumers have a smile on their faces again.

“It is definitely a good thing for our company,” Mr Jannie Kasselman of Kasselman Security Services said.

“We average about 450km per patrol vehicle per shift.

“Our petrol account per month is about R120 000 and with the drop in price we save between R4 000 and R5 000, which adds up to about R50 000 per year.”

Mr Kasselman also said they have been focusing on foot and bicycle patrols due to the steep petrol prices of late.

“It has a positive effect on our business,” Mr Nick Iacovou, store manager of Spar, said.

“With the drop in price our customers have more income at their disposal to spend on luxuries.

“Unfortunately it does not affect the price of food, although when the price increases, so does the price of food.

“I think the decrease has a small impact with businesses increasing prices at the beginning of the year,” Mr Iacovou also said.

For the average man on street the drop in price has been a welcome relief, especially during the festive season.

“It has left us with a little extra cash in our pockets,” was the reply of most local motorists when asked about the decrease in petrol prices.

An employee at a local petrol station said: “We feel the pinch when the price drops.”

“We sell the stock on hand at the new price and not the price we originally bought it for.”

He also said that in the long run the drop in price is good for the petrol outlet with customers having more cash in hand.
