Grasslands under threat

Very few people are aware that Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga are facing a serious natural disaster.

It is all because of an invasion by an “attractive” pink alien flowering plant.

The Standerton Lions Club requested residents when seeing this weed growing in their vicinity to eradicate it immediately.

Pompom weed has become a problem plant of grassland and savanna ecosystems in Gauteng and Limpopo and is expanding its range in Mpumalanga and North West provinces.

It was first recorded in South Africa 50 years ago and has a significant negative impact on plant bio-diversity.
