Mayor says non payment a discrace
Lindi Masina concerned about those who are dodging paying for services.
SECUNCDA – Ms Lindi Masina, executive mayor, slammed residents and businesses that are not paying for services.
She said the Govan Mbeki Municipality is currently facing serious and debilitating challenges with regard to revenue collection which is supposed to be sustaining its existence in all forms and manifestations.
She said it is inconceivable that the municipality can be self-sustained if thousands of its residents do not pay for services and that people treat this “painful reality as normality.
“Some have not been paying for years and this is disgusting, to say the least.
“Why do we expect the institution to perform effectively and efficiently if our customers/community do not pay their dues to the municipality?”
She urged the municipal manager to release a list of the people who are not paying to the mayoral committee for each ward.
Ms Masina said she will launch Operation butha ama arrears in March.
“There are private businesses that do not pay for municipal services and yet there are no consequences.
“Why do we have businesses that are not paying their dues to the municipality and yet they expect to receive quality services from the same municipality?”
She said the majority of residents of Leandra, Eendracht and Lebohang are not paying for services.
“The big question is why? Unfortunately, nobody is prepared to give an honest answer to this simple question.
“It is still mind-boggling as to who took this bizarre decision and on what basis.”
