SACP honours struggle icons

The South African Communist Party (SACP) in Lekwa held memorial lectures on 22 March.

The lectures focused on two struggle icons, Messrs Moses Kotane and J.B. Marks.

Both lectures were held at the Ext 6 Community Hall.

According to Mr Touch Ndlovu, the lectures were aimed at educating the new SACP members about the role that both Moses Kotane and J.B. Marks played in the struggle for liberation.

“We also want the members to learn from these two struggle icons,” he said.

Mr Moses Kotane was a politician and activist and was secretary general of the SACP from 1939 until his death in 1978.

Mr Kotane suffered a stroke in 1968 and went for treatment to Russia.

He later died on 19 May 1978 and his remains were returned to South Africa on 1 March.

He was reburied at Pella in the North West on 14 March.

Mr J. B. Marks was also a politician and served as chairman of the SACP.

He also served as treasurer-general of the ANC.

Mr Marks was part of the first generation of black South Africans that joined the Young Communist League (YCL) in the 1920s.

His remains were reburied in his hometown of Ventersdorp in the North West on 22 March.

It was returned from Russia earlier this month.
