Traffic jams become a frequent occurrence

Hours after a traffic jam in Nelson Mandela Drive after an accident the previous day, another traffic jam was caused at 9am on 15 May.

A truck with an abnormal load tried to pass under the railway bridge heading towards town.

Luckily, the truck driver and co-driver, averted damage to the bridge and vehicle due to some quick thinking.

On the approach to the bridge the occupants of the truck noticed the truck and its load would not fit under the bridge on the left side of the road.

On the right side of the road, under the bridge, there is a slight incline which was enough for the truck and its load to pass, without getting stuck in the process.

This is what caused the traffic jam as the driver of the huge truck had to reverse and drive on the other side of the road.

He had to reverse several times to gain the correct route under the bridge, which in itself was an exceptional piece of driving in such a confined space with such a large load on the trailer.

Traffic was disrupted in both directions as the driver negotiated the tricky circumstances.

A traffic official did his best to keep impatient motorists, travelling in both directions, happy while the truck made its way inch by inch under the bridge.

Traffic was back to normal after about a 30 minute delay.
