eMbalenhle pupils vist Bethal Prison
Some people say prion is a five star hotel and that is not true.
eMBALENHLE – Pupils from high schools in eMbalenhle had an opportunity to experience prison life at Bethal Correctional Service.
The aim of the visit was to educate young people about the dangers of committing crimes and socialising with the wrong people.
Mr Mduduzi Mahlangu from eMbalenhle is an ex offender who believes in sharing his story with the young people to prevent them from making the same mistakes he did.
During the prison visit, two convicts shared their stories with the pupils.
One of the convicts said she is serving a 20 years sentence for killing her friend.
She killed her friend because her boyfriend cheated on her with her friend.
She encouraged young people not to be involved in relationships while they are still young.
“Some people say prison is a five star hotel and that is not true.
“Today we are having pap and two boiled eggs for dinner,” she said.
The prisoner’s final words were that she regrets the time she had spent with the wrong people.
Another convict was a man who told the pupils not to fight their parents, but they must focus on education.
He said most young people who commit crimes, blames it on their parents’ separation.
“I start to serve my sentence in 1993 and I don’t know when I will get parole,” said the man.
The man who is only known as ‘Government’, feels like reversing the time but for him it is too late.
He further said young people should stop being used by other people to sell drugs.
“The people you are selling drugs for, get rich, not you.”
Pupils also visited the cells of those who are waiting for trial.
The waiting trial cells were full of young people who asked for money to buy cigarettes.
Lindokuhle Ndlela, from Sizwakele High School is one of the pupils who visited the prison and she said she felt bad especially for the woman who killed her friend.
