Imbawulas can be deadly

Police urge residents to be careful this winter.

As winter has begun and the weather becomes colder, many people in the township depend on an imbawula to heat their homes.

An imbawula is a makeshift coal stove that is designed to burn for a long time.

Though it fights the cold, it can pose a hazard to one’s health as it releases toxic fumes, namely carbon monoxide, when burning.

Local police urged residents to be cautious when they use an imbawula and to avoid putting it inside their houses because it can lead to fatalities.

Capt Magonseni Nkosi, police spokesman, said many fatalities are reported in the winter.

“People need to look after their heating and lighting appliances and use the imbawula outside their homes.

“We understand that most shack dwellers use it to keep warm and for cooking.

“We urge you to seriously consider the dangers around it and educate children about its dangers.”
