Adopt a Granny in conjunction with SANZAF Highveld Muslim School and Fashion World

The Highveld Muslim School is part of the initiative and two pupils were matched with a granny to accompany them on a subsidised shopping spree.

SECUNDA – Eighteen local pensioners each received a thousand rand voucher to use at Fashion World.

The South African National Zahka Fund (SANZAF) has the popular Adopt a Granny initiative, which is now in its third year and forms part of Operation Winter Warmth that is already in full swing this season.

This initiative not only aims at satisfying the material needs of the elderly by providing them with appropriate clothes for the winter, but also seeks to extend a hand of compassion and love to them so they are made to feel special.

SANZAF is partnering with over 20 high schools nationally to treat about 510 grannies to a shopping spree, making this initiative one of the largest volunteer-driven programmes of its kind.

SANZAF will be spending in excess of R500 000 on the initiative and each granny will be allocated an amount ranging from R500 to R1 000 to buy clothes of their choice, while they are assisted by the pupils.

Each school has identified and adopted 20 grannies from their surrounding communities.

Locally the Highveld Muslim School is part of this initiative and two pupils from the school were matched with each granny to accompany them on their subsidised shopping spree.

Most of the grannies spent their vouchers on warm winter clothes, pajamas and one or two special pieces of clothing.

Fluffy slippers, boots and shoes were also on their shopping lists.

The grannies enjoyed the morning and took their time, choosing to browse around the store, sit down on the chairs provided by Fashion World and chat about the clothes available before making their selections.

The staff and management from Fashion World and a representative from SANZAF were on hand to assist the grannies in any way possible.

Many of the grannies are from different pensioner clubs, but they all enjoyed the morning together, talking to one another, sitting in the sun and generally appreciating this outing for the treat that it was.

Each walked out with at least two big Fashion World bags full of clothing and could not wait to show one another their new clothes.

The Adopt a Granny initiative is an ongoing project and these grannies will be spoiled like this throughout the winter.
