Catherine keeps our cores strong

Health consciousness is a trend that will never go out of fashion and is always at the back of our minds.

SECUNDA– Fitness seems to be on everyone’s mind and staying in good shape, is a real struggle for most of us.

Ms Catherine Hoffland is a Pilates instructor and has made it her goal to ensure that the people she trains, keep fit.

She has been giving Pilates classes for 10 years and is planning on being around for a long time.

Ms Hoffland said: “Pilates is designed to help with your core and posture, and with rehabilitation from injuries.”

She also does cardio classes to keep that heart rate up and to ensure that you do burn that unwanted fat.

When it comes to fat burning, she said a diet is very important to ensure your body gets the right amount of calories to promote weight loss.

“When you decide on a diet, it should not be seen as a curse, because if you do, you won’t be committed to it and it will fade away.

“See a good diet as a lifestyle change to ensure you have a longer and healthy life.

“When looking at healthy eating, keep in mind that if you are going to train in the morning that you do eat breakfast at least an hour before you exercise.

“It is important to snack well to make the metabolism faster which helps controlling your weight.”

Ms Hoffland knows the importance of being active and said: “I see Secunda people tend to be very health conscious which is a good thing.

“Take a look at the runners who jog in the day and the overall feeling that people give regarding health.”

Pilates is a good way to improve physical strength, flexibility and enhance mental awareness.

It is important to know that there is a difference between Pilates and yoga as people tend to think it is the same thing.

One of the main differences is that yoga can be used for improving the flexibility of the body and it will also gradually increase the flexibility of your joints.

Pilates focuses on trying to relax tense muscles and provide strengthening of the numerous muscles of the body.

Ms Hoffland is looking for matrics who are planning a gap year to consider doing a course with her in Pilates for which they can get a certificate that can be used worldwide.

The course is in Pretoria and half of the course will be paid and the other half candidates can work off by running classes at Ms Hoffland’s studio.

Ms Hoffland said: “This is a good opportunity for matrics to consider as a gap year type of option.

“The opportunity to see the world is out there and you can give Pilates classes while doing this and ensure that you earn some money while exploring.”

Ms Hoffland also gives dance classes to show that you can have fun while exercising.
