Freedom Square residents in eMzinoni refuse to move

Angry locals vowed not to go anywhere until Govan Mbeki Municipality provided proper land or RDP houses.

This came after Council served them with an alleged fraudulent eviction letter on 11 October that was signed by the former municipal manager, Mr Mmela Mahlangu.

““The municipality’s tricks will not work this time.

“We are not going anywhere.”

A woman said they had a committee that was negotiating with the municipality, but it dissolved when many of the members received life threats.

The municipality promised to give residents an alternative place to live, because Council wants to develop the hostels into family units.

A municipal survey showed most of the residents did not qualify for the family units, some qualified for RDP houses and some for compensated stands.

Govan Mbeki Municipality is aware of the problems at Freedom Square and said they are working round the clock to resolve them.

Mr Thokozani Mdawe, municipal acting spokesman, said the municipality allocated land to residents, but they did not want it.

He could not give any clear answer when he was asked about the outdated eviction letter that Council gave to locals.

The letter gives residents 21 days to vacate Freedom Square and to move to their stands in Ext 5.
