Two men allegedly assaulted Mr Fanie Ndlovu with a hammer in Shaka Street in Sakhile on 24 May at 6am.
Mr Ndhlovu was on his way to work when the alleged assailants pretended to pass him, turned and allegedly struck him on the head.
He fell and when he got up, they tried to rob him, but failed because he fought back.
A Good Samaritan came to his aid.
The suspects fled and the man rushed to his workplace and thereafter opened a case at the Sakhile Police Station.
Mr Ndlovu sustained minor injuries that were treated at the Standerton Hospital.
A case of common assault was opened at the police.
