“I take advantage when opportunities avail themselves”

Her current position as the assistant manager did not come easy and Ms Mokopi had to sacrifice most of her time to learn and attend various courses.

Self confidence and a good approach landed Ms Amelia Mokopi from Kinross a job at one of the best restaurants.

She has always aspired to become a professional chef, but ended up studying financial management after matric.

Ms Mokopi worked as a waitress for nearly two years at Graceland Casino, Hotel and Country Club.

“While working at Graceland, a man who often gambled there asked whether I have studied maths and science, and I happened to have studied maths and accounting.”

He insisted on taking her to a new garage on the N17 highway where the employees referred her to the manager of Steers Restaurant.

“I introduced myself and began to sell myself to her.”

Ms Mokopi said the manager looked at her and said: “I like your face.”

That was how she landed the job at the N17 Steers Kinross five years ago.

Ms Mokopi had to sacrifice most of her time to learn and attend different courses.

She began by mopping the floors and washing the dishes.

She then moved on to make hamburgers, became a cashier, a supervisor and then the assistant manager.

Ms Mokopi sees herself as one of the future franchise managers at Famous Brand, an umbrella company for Steers.

Her daily challenges include customer complaints, especially over weekends when some people are drunk, but she was trained to handle them.

Ms Mokopi also does community outreach programmes and some of them led to N17 Steers Kinross winning awards.

The latest award was The Real Award where they spent a day with Marietjie Special School and also donated a school uniform to a needy learner.
