The Secunda police are concerned over an increase in the theft of older model motor vehicles, housebreakings and accidents involving pedestrians.
According to Capt Bettina Zondo, communications officer for the Secunda Police Station, there has been a marked increase in the theft of older vehicles.
“Criminals are targeting vehicles that have less security features and are therefore easier to steal.
“These vehicles might also be used when they commit other crimes as there are more of them on the road, which means they can ‘disappear’ more easily.”
Drivers who own these types of cars, must be careful where they park, make sure their cars are locked and if possible invest in visible anti-theft devices.
Another type of crime that is on the rise, is housebreakings where it is clear that the victims had been observed for a number of days before the break-ins.
“Criminals still force open windows and cut burglar bars, but if they know your routine then they know that they have time to do this.
“You should not leave your keys or gate remote controls in post boxes or around the house if you are expecting someone, rather arrange for a neighbour to keep them, as burglars know about this and can get into your house by using your keys, which will affect your insurance claim.
To avoid being a victim of a housebreaking, Capt Zondo suggested you avoid falling into a routine and be aware of what is going on in your street and community.
“Look at the faces of people who walk around or wait in cars and if you see the same face twice, make a mental note of the registration number.
“If someone is acting suspiciously or seems to be walking around without a reason, try to get a clear description of them and then phone the police to report them.”
Capt Zondo warned residents about trying to take pictures of suspicious individuals or confronting them.
Finally, Capt Zondo is concerned about the increase in accidents that involve pedestrians.
