Councillor collapses amid violent disruption of Govan Mbeki council meeting

Things got out of control as councillors started to leave the chamber and the protesters got violent, triggering a fire extinguisher and releasing fire suppressant powder inside the chamber.

SECUNDA – Govan Mbeki Municipality’s Special Council Meeting was called off today following disruptions by a group of protesters.

These protesters were singing revolutionary songs and were carrying placards that read “Flora must go.”

It is unclear where they came from and what their agenda was, however a source told the newspaper that the protesters are against the appointment of the municipal manager who is not from the area.

Things got out of control as councillors started to leave the chamber and the protesters got violent, triggering a fire extinguisher and releasing fire suppressant powder inside the chamber.

Mr Mapike Mtsweni collapsed and was given first aid by his comrades.

Opposition parties condemned the actions of the protesters and said the factions in the ANC are undermining Council.
