Billing problems will be sorted at the end of August, says municipality

GMM gives answers to complaints about the municipal billing system and promises a speedy resolution.

Over the past two weeks, the Ridge Times has been inundated with complaints about municipal accounts.

The three account related complaints were:

1. No municipal accounts were received for July.

2. Municipal accounts that were received, did not have a clear breakdown of the costs and utility usage.

3. Some residents who received accounts, received inflated municipal accounts that were sometimes double or triple the previous month’s amount, without a clear indication as to why.

The municipality was contacted for comment and Mr Bheki Kubheka, municipal spokesman apologised on behalf of the municipality and explained the situation.

“The municipality would like to sincerely apologise for the accounts challenges that the consumers have continued to experience on their June and July accounts.

He explained that this was a result of the municipality migrating to a new financial system as regulated by the Municipal Standard Charts of Accounts that was gazetted through Gazette No 37577.

“This system upgrade has not yet yielded the expected results and this is the reason for the current billing problems.”

The service provider and the municipality are working round the clock to resolve this matter and the municipality will ensure that the August accounts are in order and the data has been reconciled to ensure that the correct tariffs are implemented as approved by Council.

Mr Kubekha promised there will be a correction on all over and under charged accounts where the over charged amounts will be credited and under charged amounts will be corrected on the August municipal account.
