Police’s swift response led to the arrest of three stock theft suspects recently.
The three men, aged between 22 and 45, were arrested on 7 September after they were found with a bull that was suspected to have been stolen during an auction in eMalahleni (Witbank).
Bethal Stock Theft Unit members attended the auction.
They spotted the bull in a trailer that was ready to be sold by the three men, who when quizzed, failed to confirm the bull’s particulars, including the brand mark it bore.
A short probe revealed that the bull was allegedly stolen from a farm near Bethal.
Sgt Koos Skosana checked the brand mark and the three men who claimed that the bull belonged to them failed to give a clear description of the brand mark.
As a trained police officer who knows the owners of the brand marks, he took a photo of the bull and contacted the owner at Fairview Farm between Bethal and Kriel to check if he knows anything about the bull.
The owner confirmed that one of his bulls was missing.
The men were arrested on allegations of stock theft and are scheduled to appear in the Bethal Magistrate’s Court on 12 September.
