Lt Thulani Gamede from Secunda Police Station reminded licensed firearm owners to keep them safe and to make sure their licences have been renewed.
He said there is an increase in armed robbery and he encouraged those with lost firearms to report them to avoid being implicated in criminal activities should their firearms be found to have been used to commit a crime.
Lt Gamede said if a member of the community is suspected of owning an unlicensed firearm or of having a licensed firearm but uses it to threaten people, the police should be informed.
Those who tipped off the police about the firearm will not be expected to give evidence in court.
In families where a member has a firearm and they suspect a change in the behaviour of that person, they should inform the police that the person has a firearm and shows signs of depression, emotional stress or of abusive behaviour.
Those with expired licences are also urged to renew them.
