Govan Mbeki Municipality will meet with Eskom on Wednesday, 27 September in an attempt to prevent possible bulk power cuts by Eskom due to the municipal debt.
Eskom has announced that it will be interrupting power supplies starting on Monday, 9 October to municipalities that did not honour their debt settlement arrangements, including the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
Mr Bheki Kubheka said the municipality remains confident that an agreement favourable to both parties will be reached on the day.
Council owes Eskom about R480 million, including the old debt.
Govan Mbeki Municipality reached a debt repayment agreement with Eskom in March and although the municipality paid the initial amount owing for March, the municipality could not pay the rest for a few months.
