Despite negative comments and criticism, Mr Sibusiso Hlolweni, leader of the Sakhisizwe Progressive Movement (Saprpmo), has received, he is adamant that locals should stand up and raise funds to settle Govan Mbeki Municipality’s Eskom account.
He and his party have launched a campaign in which they ask residents to donate R10 per household.
Mr Hlolweni believes if locals respond to his call, the Eskom debt can be settled in no time.
He urged households to pledge R10 each that can be paid into the municipality’s bank account.
“Each person should write Eskom debt as a reference and by so doing so, will hold the municipality accountable for those funds.
He urged people from outside the jurisdiction of the municipality to also take part in this campaign by either pledging or spreading the news about this campaign.
Locals condemned Mr Hlolweni on social media and accused him of being used by the ANC.
