Govan Mbeki Municipality urged residents to prevent sewage spillages by not throwing foreign objects into sewers.
Municipal workers of the Department of Water and Sanitation were attending to a sewer blockage in Secunda on 19 October and found a blanket inside the pipe.
Mr Bheki Kubheka, municipal spokesman, said the throwing of foreign objects into sewers causes damage to the infrastructure and poses a threat to human health.
“Objects stuffed down sewer pipes are the cause of most of the blockages.
“Among the items that we often find are clothing, newspapers, sanitary towels, disposable nappies and general household waste.”
The municipality said when sewage overflows into the streets, residents, particularly children, become exposed to illnesses caused by waterborne diseases.
Residents are therefore encouraged to report blocked and overflowing drains and any prohibited acts such as the opening of manhole covers to dispose of rubbish, to ensure that the sewer system runs smoothly.
