Police urged people not to telephonically give their personal details, especially bank details, to strangers.
This came after a sim swap scam came to light.
It is alleged that the criminals, who claim to be from a service provider, contact people and ask them to confirm certain information.
After gathering the information, they perform a fraudulent sim swap.
This allows the criminals to receive SMSs destined for the account holder, letting them add beneficiaries to the online banking account.
Capt Bettinah Zondo, police spokesman, said many cases have been reported recently.
She advised locals to ignore those calls and that if they want to change their banking pin code, they should go to their bank.
