The acting municipal manager of Govan Mbeki Municipality, Mr BM Mhlanga, warned the public against looters.
“It has come to our serious attention that there are opportunistic looters who are visiting businesses demanding that they are given cash in order to avert their services being cut off as part of Operation Kodiko.”
Operation Kodiko is a programme that is currently underway and is implemented by municipal officials who are visiting businesses whose services accounts are overdue.

“The legit process of Operation Kodiko is that where such municipal officials visit your business as delegated, they will inform you of your debt as per the debtors list and show you your account is in arrears and thereafter advise you properly on the payment methods.”
According to Mr Mhlanga, the only methods of payment the public can use to settle outstanding accounts are EFT transfers or cash at the pay points at the municipality.
“It is against this background that the municipality would like to seriously warn businessmen of this fraudulent exercise.
“We want to reiterate that under no circumstances shall the municipality send officials to collect money or cash at your business or private premises and we thus advise that the police are informed should these looters visit your business.”
