EVANDER – The stench is unbearable on the Bracken Road between Evander and eMbalenhle due to the illegal dumping site near the Brenden Village turn off.
The site is spreading throughout the area as people are dumping refuse daily.
Animal carcasses, household rubbish and garden waste, household goods such as televisions, mattresses and furniture, building waste, tyres, chemical drums and paint tins are among the rubble that is dumped.
People from eMbalenhle, Evander and Brenden Village are guilty of illegally dumping refuse there.
Residents said: “This can cause harm or injury to humans and wildlife or lead to pollution of the environment.
“Animals can also become entangled in some of the refuse that can lead to injury or death. We cannot blame the municipality for this, because we must take responsibility for dumping refuse illegally.”
The illegal dumping of refuse is also a problem in eMbalenhle.
In Ext 7 behind the House of Praise Tarbernacle and in other parts of the area, illegal dumping sites are mushrooming.

Locals have lashed out at Govan Mbeki Municipality and said this is due to their non collection of waste.
“We pay for services, but they do not collect, what should we do? Should we let garbage pile up outside our homes? We will not dump refuse illegally as long as they collect the waste on time.”
A resident criticised those looting and said the municipality must enforce strict bylaws to deal with the problem in the area.
He said those found dumping refuse illegally should be fined.
The municipality did offer a response.
