Owners of apartment blocks are upset and confused after they were charged amounts of between R25 000 and R40 000 for electricity.
According to Ms Estelle Swart, DA councillor, these apartment blocks all have pre-paid electricity meters installed, but municipal workers installed bulk meters on the outside of these blocks in March.
Some of the owners have been billed since March for pre-paid electricity.
“We have to pay double for electricity, because they bill us while the tenants of the apartments had bought the electricity and installed it on their pre-paid electricity meters,” said one of the owners.
Business owners of Evander and Secunda are also upset because their electricity was cut without notice or an explanation.
The Ridge Times contacted the municipal manager of Govan Mbeki Municipality, Mr Thisha Mhlanga, for comment, but he said he was in a meeting and would respond later.
