The eMbalenhle community, led by the Economic Freedom Fighters and few ANC members, were picketing outside the Evander Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 26 January during the appearance of alleged gangsters.
Messrs Andries Jiyane, Bafana Hlatshwayo, Emmanuel Dladla, Ernest Shongwe, Lucky Vilakazi, Mduduzi Mahlangu, Mxolisi Mahlangu, Sipho Babadi, Sipho Hlongwane and Vonse Malusha are accused of assaulting and killing Mr Simon Matsotso in October during a fight between the community and gangsters.
It is alleged he was with community leaders who were mobilising residents to take a stand against gangs that were allegedly burning houses and terrorising locals in Extension 22, when they were confronted by the gang.
Mr Matsotso allegedly pulled out a gun and fired a warning shot, but the gang members did not turn back and overpowered him and took his gun.
They allegedly assaulted him and shot him dead with his gun.
Disgruntled residents said they support the deceased’s family and pleaded with the court to issue harsh sentences.
“These guys have been terrorising our area and many people have died because of the gangs in the area. They were raping and pick-pocketed people, vandalised homes, and did many other crimes. They must get life sentences. We will follow this case until the end and we hope justice will be served.”
The case was postponed to 26 March and the suspects remain in custody.
Residents who were arrested for public violence during this incident, also appeared in court and their case was postponed to 2 February.
