Imbawula can be deadly
Several incidents of fire believed to cause Imbawula were reported to police recently.
eMZINONI – As winter has begun and the weather becomes colder, many people in the township depend on an imbawula (brazier) to heat their homes.
Though it fights off the cold, it can pose a hazard to one’s health because it releases toxic fumes, namely carbon monoxide, when burning.
eMzinoni Police urged residents to be cautious when they use an imbawula and to avoid putting it inside their homes because it can lead to fatalities.
This came after various incidents were already reported in the area. In one incident a man has burned beyond recognition in his house.
Upon investigation police discovered that there was an imbawula in his room.
In another incident a 61-year-old man was found burned in his outside room.
Const Cynthia Mtsweni said the cause of the fire was not yet known in the last incident.
