Rand Water throttles supply to Govan Mbeki Municipality

Residents are upset that they are not given notices for the water interruptions

HIGHVELD – Residents have been experiencing water interruptions in the entire Govan Mbeki Municipality recently.

Locals have been complaining that the water interruptions are too much and that they are never given notice.

The newspaper learned that this is because Rand Water is now throttling water by 20 per cent in the Govan Mbeki municipal area because the municipality failed to keep to its payment agreement.

Mr Benzi Soko, Chief of Staff atĀ Govan Mbeki Municipality confirmed the reason for the water throttling, but he said Rand Water has been throttling water supply in the whole Govan Mbeki municipal area and they have been doing it for the last few months.

“The municipality is currently in negotiations with Rand Water,” Mr Soko said.

Mr Humphrey Dube, EFF councillor, said the municipality must not use Rand Water as an excuse.

He said he has been reliably informed that the reservoir near Bracken Mine is leaking, but the council is doing nothing about it.

“The reality is that someone is not doing his job and who is not accounting to anyone.

“This municipality is failing its people.”
